How to stretch watercolour paper: drawing, painting a classic Hallstatt scene, all with commentary. Thank you to Maria Kellner who has corrected my error in this video: After a lifetime of my cutting off the tape, Maria tells me that you don't need to cut it off, if you are framing the watercolour in the traditional way. You glue your paper onto gator board which is used as the frame-backing. Brilliant. I'll do a follow up video with this new knowledge. Obviously, I'm not used to my works being framed! I mount them onto canvas, so I do need a clean edge. Or they were used in publishing, and were never framed!! Although, you might need to use this wet stretching method, as the paper has a curl. Or you can wet the curled sheet, then lay it flat to dry. I started at the National Art School with teacher training, then moved into the commercial world of graphic design. Illustration eventually took over, and that returned me to painting full time. I paint in three mediums: watercolour, acrylic and oils. Normally I paint large works, and exhibit them in galleries: Studio ONE88 in Katoomba is my current gallery. I always have a few works from each show that remain unsold, and these are on my web site. They are for sale, and I organise delivery with shipping companies who know how to handle fine art. I live in Mulgoa, 60kms west of Sydney, on the edge of the Blue Mountains. My husband is Bob Peters, a photographer who is now retired. We have two wonderful children who are both successful in their careers. A two-year old Cavoodle named Honey completes the family. We have a "mini-farm" of 5 acres, and most of my non-painting time is spent gardening. To keep my brain active I bought an old piano ($50), stripped it down, rebuilt it, then traded it in for a good piano! That is now my other hobby: learning to play! My subject is Hallstatt is in Austria. It is a classic lake side village, nestled below high mountains. We visited more than ten years ago, on a cool January day. No tourists, except for us! In this painting tutorial, I demonstrate how watercolour can be applied very wet and manipulated to create the effect of distant snowy hills. By adding shadows we can create rock formations, and with my favourite white, make the two dimensions look 3D. I think this painting is a "beginner level", yet advanced painters should enjoy it as well. It's just fun to splash paint over the page, and leave the fiddly bits to last! I often paint acrylics on paper: sort of a mix of watercolour technique with traditional painting. It’s a halfway position which gives me freedom to be creative. It is very forgiving, as one can re-paint sections. This video has the usual hiccups: camera fail, I fail! I used voice over in the middle to avoid having to dump this video. I had lots of fun painting this plein air watercolor at the Wooden Boat Centre at tiny Franklin in Tasmania: it's a real-time demonstration that shows the reality of plein air painting: passing visitors, a barking dog and then some guys taking my boat! I found this scene quite challenging, but I'm sure most mid level artists will enjoy it. Btw, when the barking dog was too loud we removed the audio, and sometimes clipped the video altogether. Plein air watercolor painting on a pristine beach, with a warm breeze! This is my version of heaven! Easy beginners level demonstration, with real-time commentary. This area is called Burns Bay, which is near St Helens on the east coast of Tasmania, Australian. You can see the 'wetness' of the paper, and how the paints run and merge as the painting dries. I'm using watercolours, but you can do exactly the same with acrylics!
